just wanted to make a comment on the images you selected for your essay. The M.I.A. one in particular.
I thought it was interesting when you mentioned that the background was meant to reference west African textiles. I know when I saw it, with it's garish-looking color pallet (which is why I didn't say anything, heh ;) ), I thought of what a computer, or similar electronic medium, looks like when it crashes. That, combined with the arrangement of the images seem to reference the old station test pattern card (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:RCA_Indian_Head_test_pattern.JPG), seem to make the cover make a statement about signal/communication failure.
That's probably no help to you. In fact, you probably mentioned it and I just didn't pick up on it. ;) But just thought I'd say something anyway.
