The Machine

In his article The Art and Craft of the Machine, it seems to me that FLW is worried that using the machine people will become lazy and put less thought into their art. His thoughts on this are really interesting because they mimic the concerns that some of the older design instructors have about the computer and it's software.

The first part of the article FLW seems to argue that the machine has been detrimental to art in the past as he defines it. However he also thinks that with more study by artisans and engineers they will be able to use the machine to bring it to an even greater level.

There is some technology now that seems to be detrimental to people's perception of design. With the introduction of desktop publishing, and thousands of how-to books on 'web design' the value of designers is questioned because everyone thinks they can do it themselves.

To me it seems that the machines that FLW talks about and modern technology both have the potential to devalue art and design in the eyes of the public. However good design is dependent on the skill of the designer not the quality of the tools at his or her disposal.
